From my original blog, "Elementals" July 2005:
I recently went to the Baroque Summer Band Camp for my yearly pilgrimage. Each year I find new friends, new interesting people to be with. This year, it was Andrew, a 20-year old cellist/gambist who I attracted my eye from the first day.
This young man was physically not the type who pops up on my radar screen ever, primarily because of his age and stature, but he had the most amazing energy of a young person that I've ever met. In my mind's eye, he's a veritable geyser of clean, bright white energy. Absolutely without malice of any kind, he channels strong love straight from the heart of the universe as if it were gushing out of a fire hydrant. What a joy to see! And what a joy to be around. Like a teenager in heat, I found myself contriving to be near him at every opportunity so that I could just drink it in. Though I thought I was being slick, I'm pretty sure that he saw right through me. Embarrassing.
I knew that he had potential for being with guys, but figured that he hadn't gone that route yet. So, knowing that you don't get what you don't ask for, I hiked up my courage and asked if I could run my fingers through his thick, curly auburn mohawk. To my surprise he said yes without hesitation. I spent many glorious minutes over the next couple of weeks with my hands on this beautiful, sweet man, basking in his gentleness and soaking up a huge supply of love. Thank you, Andrew! Thank you for letting me, and doubly so for letting me do it in public.
What a beautiful thing when a person lets you into his personal space like that with no reservations and seemingly with no fear. What a great gift to be given!
(oh, and his musicianship was most excellent, too).
Update 2008: saw Andrew last year at the Baroque festival in Vancouver. No, he's not queer that I can detect, but he was totally welcoming of me, and gave me one huge hug. We hung out a LOT together.
