Life in the Weird Lane

This weekend, and spilling over into today, has been strange. Just not your ordinary weekend shape at all. Not that it has been bad, only, er, different.

Since it's Columbus Day Observed today, many of my Guv'mint clients didn't show up for their appointments. Two of them at least called and sort of squirmingly told me that they wouldn't be here, so I won't stick pins in their dolls tonight.

On the brighter side, I had a major breakthrough in my singing today, something I've been trying for for a long time. I finally just said, "fuck it" and quit worrying about it, and damned if things didn't work about a hundred percent better! I think I've been worrying too much and trying too much and not relaxing and just doing enough.

Do,
Or do not.
There is no try. ~Yoda

My mom (my voice teacher) always says, "the easy way is the best way", and dammit, I know she's right, but hate to have it flung in my face like that. But for now, I'll take this little lesson as hard-won and dear: I'm working on the hardest solo recital that I've ever done, all early Italian (Early Baroque) with its concomitant ornamentation: battuto con la gola, trilli, tremoli, gruppi and wild, all-over-the-place passaggi in general. Scary, and yet fun when I get it to work right.

And today it worked right. I'm really good at this style already, but mastering it has been a task that I began about twenty five years ago when I was a wee undergrad and just beginning to sing Early Music.

Today was glorious and fun! I always hope to translate that into my concerts.

Good going with the ornamenti. When you segue into French Baroque, you'll be ready for the roulades, cascades, glisser, and other agrements. :-)
